New Orleans Saints vs Miami Dolphins: Key Matchup

The 5-0 New Orleans Saints are set to travel into Miami to do battle with the 2-3 Dolphins at former Dolphin Stadium, now renamed Land Shark Stadium.

Both teams are coming into the game on highs, as the Saints easily handled their toughest opponent of the season last week against the New York Giants, while the Dolphins are riding a two game winning streak, beating the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets before taking a bye week last week.

The Dolphins use the “Wildcat” formation on offense to drive defenses around the league crazy, while creating exciting play for football fans all around the world.

This week’s key match up will revolve around the Dolphins “Wildcat”.

This week’s key match up is:

New Orleans Saints Defensive Line

Vs

Miami Dolphins Ronnie Brown & the “Wildcat” offense

The Saints will need to disrupt Ronnie Brown & the "Wildcat" Sunday.

The Saints will need to disrupt Ronnie Brown & the "Wildcat" Sunday.

The New Orleans Saints are easily the holder of the best offense in the National Football League providing points almost at will, as shown against the NFL’s best defensive squad last week against New York. The Saints scored 48 points manhandling the Giants, but in my opinion the key to the Saints starting out 5-0 on the year is their defense.

Gregg Williams was brought in by Saints management and head coach Sean Payton to fortify a defense that struggled last season.

The addition of key players such as Jabari Greer and most notably Darren Sharper has seemed to transform the Saints into an admirable defensive squad keeping their opponents from competing with the Saints high octane, high scoring offensive squad.

The Saints have done a very good job on the defensive line, despite an injury to starter Kendrick Clancy.

The combination of Charles Grant, Sedrick Ellis, Will Smith & Remi Ayodele have held backs such as the Lions Kevin Smith, the Eagles Brian Westbrook, the Bills Fred Jackson, the Jets Thomas Jones, and the Giants Brandon Jacobs to less than reasonable running games allowing for the Saints line backing and secondary core to focus their attention on attacking the opposing teams passing game.

This week the Saints face a new challenge in the form of Ronnie Brown heading the “Wildcat” offense, while quarterback Chad Henne takes over during regular formation plays. The combo of Henne’s strong arm mixed together with the “Wildcat” run by Brown have confused defenses around the league all season and has come into full force the past two Dolphins games.

With the “Wildcat” always in the back of the minds of defensive players the opportunity for Henne’s cannon of an arm to go down field have been left wide open.

If the Saints are to control the “Wildcat” the front defensive foursome will need to prepare to be on the move clogging up any available holes created by Miami’s young and very talented offensive line.

If the “Wildcat” is neutralized early in the game by the Saints than expect to see Gregg Williams run his blitz happy defense forcing pressure upon Henne, not allowing him to have time to use his best weapon, the long ball.

If the “Wildcat” continues to be effective against the Saints defense like it was against the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, the Saints may have to wield and deal points at an unreasonably high amount, which they have shown they are capable of doing behind quarterback Drew Brees.

Match up winner: The Saints defensive line

I personally think the Saints defensive line will handle Ronnie Brown and the “Wildcat” overall throughout the game causing the Dolphins to play more of a standard formational game. This will allow the likes of Charles Grant & Will Smith to attack Henne forcing passes into the hands of Greer & Sharper.

Let’s see what happens this Sunday as the Saints & Dolphins get underway at Land Shark Stadium @ 4:15pm EST sharp.
