Saints Pick Apart Giants Defense in Victory

The undefeated New Orleans Saints hosted a fellow undefeated team in the form of the New York Giants yesterday at the Louisiana Superdome.

I had expressed in an earlier article relating to this game that the matchup between the two squads would be a gritty defensive contest that would be won by either the Saints running game or the Giants defense.

How wrong I was, as the contest turned into a high point performance from both the Saints and the Giants.

The difference being that the Saints point total was excruciatingly higher than the Giants.

Seven different Saints players (Mike Bell, Jeremy Shockey, Robert Meachem, Lance Moore, Reggie Bush, Marques Colston, and Heath Evans) scored touchdowns for the Saints, while quarterback Drew Brees passed for 368 yards on 23 completions and four touchdowns in a 48-27 spanking of the Giants.

The offensive line of the Saints consisting of Jermon Bushrod, Carl Nicks, Jonathan Goodwin, Jahri Evans & Jon Stinchcomb were a monstrous factor in the game, allowing Brees more than ample passing time in the pocket.

Brees used the added protection time to his advantage finding numerous targets throughout the day as he proved once again why he is an elite quarterback leading an elite team in the NFC.

What a day for Drew Brees & the Saints offense.

What a day for Drew Brees & the Saints offense.

The Saints running game also played admirably, with 72 yards coming from running back Pierre Thomas.

Combine Thomas’ total with the 34 rushing yards of the returning Mike Bell and the 17 rushing yards of Reggie Bush and the three headed monster in the Saints backfield once again gained more than 100 yards on the day.

Marques Colston certainly had the best day offensively for the Saints catching eight passes for 166 yards, showing up Giants cornerback Corey Webster on numerous occasions.

Lance Moore and Robert Meachem also had nice days with Moore catching six balls for 78 yards and Meachem catching two balls for seventy yards.

Even though the Saints defense did allow 27 points on the day, they played their hearts out keeping Eli Manning off balance for the majority of the game.

Manning threw for 178 yards completing less than half of his passes with a 14 for 31 day with a touchdown and an interception.

Jabari Greer and Roman Harper contributed in the secondary as Greer picked off Manning while leading the team in tackles with five and Harper forced a fumble of his own on a sack of Manning.

Backup Remi Ayodele contributed in the Saints front line with a sack of his own, while Charles Grant had a four tackle day.

The Saints defense lead by coordinator Gregg Williams did a fantastic job of stopping the Giants biggest weapon known as the duo running game of freight train Brandon Jacobs and the speedy Ahmad Bradshaw. The two running backs combined for 81 yards on 17 carries for the Giants, with Bradshaw scoring one lone touchdown for the pair.

The only player the Saints defense seemed to have any problem with on the day was that of wide receiver Hakeem Nicks who had a nice game with 114 receiving yards on five catches, one being that of 58 yards as he scorched the Saints secondary.

The combination of the offensive insanity applied by Drew Brees and the Saints along with a better than average defensive performance from the defense allowed for a decisive Saints victory in their toughest contest of the season.

If the Saints are making easy work of teams such as the Giants, all remaining teams that are set to battle them in the upcoming schedule should be aware that the force out of New Orleans is one of the top forces to be reckoned with in not only the NFC, but all of the National Football League.

The Saints travel into the sunshine of Miami to go head to head with a Miami Dolphins team who is riding a current winning streak next Sunday October 25th 2009.

The mind boggling offensive formation of the Dolphins known as the Wildcat may be a challenge for the Saints next week, as they look to remain undefeated atop the NFC South.

The game is scheduled for a 4:15pm EST start time.
