The New Orleans Saints are the 2009 NFC South champions thanks to their 12-0 record which has seen them beat the likes of the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, St.Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots & Washington Redskins.
The Saints had scares in Miami and Washington as well having to come from behind to beat the Patriots, but this season’s squad under the tutelage of creative head coach Sean Payton, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr & new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has gelled in one of the most dominant seasons ever put together.
The Saints, known as a one dimensional offensive team coming into this season immediately changed upon the hire of Gregg Williams. The Saints have gone from a back of the pack defensive squad to one of the best defensive teams in all of the National Football League.
The defense features a line backing core lead by Jets castaway Jonathan Vilma, a front end featuring quarterback rushing threats Will Smith & Charles Grant, and a rejuvenated secondary that saw the addition of veteran Darren Sharper completely change the way the Saints functioned defensively.
Combine the formidable defense with Drew Brees, a plethora of exciting wide receivers such as Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, Devery Henderson, Lance Moore, a brute of a tight end in Jeremy Shockey and a much improved running game headed by Pierre Thomas & Mike Bell and history could be in the making.
The New England Patriots were undefeated not too long ago, that is until they reached the Super Bowl and were shocked by a surprise New York Giants squad two seasons ago.
That Pats team was simply an amazing thing to watch, but this Saints team has everything going for them.
When they are down, they seem to come together even more as a team. The defense holds and the offense scores. The leadership of Brees is shown at its highest peak and the creative play calling of Sean Payton sparkles magically.
The team’s strength and bonding when the times are tough is what I personally think will set this Saints team apart from the Pats team from seasons past.
Do not forget there is also another undefeated team gunning to make history.
That team resides in Indianapolis and is lead by quite possibly the greatest quarterback of this generation in Peyton Manning, but the problem with that team is that they are young and young minds and the atmosphere of a big time playoff game do not work well as a combo, even if Manning is truly a genius at getting the most out of his fellow teammates.
The Saints have already dominated the NFC, won a division crown and are set to gain home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but in every Saints fans mind is the perfect streak, one which this writer thinks is very possible and most plausible when speaking of this squad.
The coming weeks should be a mesh of thrill rides, exciting plays, magical moments and possible heart break for this Saints squad which should also make them the most exciting and dramatic team to watch for the rest of the season.
The rest of the 2009 adventure for the Saints begins this Sunday as they lock horns with division rival Atlanta Falcons.
I know I can’t wait!
